A disconnected heart

The next day he was on a plane to New York, and the next time I heard from him was two years later after he experienced a rude awakening.

He was being kicked out of the apartment he lived in.

His lifestyle was making him cruel and downright offensive. Lately, he said that he was getting into fights with my great uncle, Big David. I could never understand why because David was living there dirt cheap. (Ahem) for free, so rent he didn’t have to pay.

The only thing that made David angry was the fact that Big David required him to check in and call when he was going to be out late.

“I’m grown,” David said. “I shouldn’t have to check in.”
So he didn’t. The fighting continued to get worse and Big David was fed up.
He was fed up because David was constantly coming in drunk.  To make matters worse, he constantly brought other gay men into the house being loud and boisterous. Then David started disappearing. Leaving one day and not returning until two days later.

Big David had it. Angered he told David to pack his stuff and leave because he was not going to tolerate the blatant disrespect.

So David packed the few items he had and left. He was broke and in between jobs, he decided to live with my aunt Tanya. But she had rules that he didn’t adhere to either.

Things took a turn for the drastic, when he hit rock bottom. He turned off his cell phone and disappeared.

David had gone into hiding. He was missing, and I waited and waited for him to connect back to his family. A phone call, a message on Facebook… nothing, he was gone.

                                                                                  To be continued…

  1. As someone who's had to go back and stay with relatives a time or two, I can relate to the fact that it's irksome to suddenly find yourself being treated like a kid again (having a curfew, being yelled at for having the TV too loud, such like that). Once you get used to the bachelor lifestyle and not having to answer to anyone, it's hard to go back.

That being said, it's the trade-off you agree to make for being allowed to stay somewhere rent-free, LoL. It doesn't sound like your uncle was being too unreasonable.
